The Eureka Public School Board has called a bond election on May 5 for $22,550,000
for the purpose of building a new elementary and middle school building, bus barn,
and Vocational Career & Technology Education (CTE) building.
CONCERNS:
As our current buildings age, the cost of ongoing operation and maintenance continues to rise.
Separate campus buildings require students and staff to travel outside multiple times each day. This creates isolation between buildings and limits our ability to provide effective, real-time supervision.
The Middle School and Elementary School roof systems are at the end of their useful life and must be replaced. With current construction costs, each roof replacement is estimated to be close to $1,000,000. These significant expenses must be weighed against other deferred maintenance needs and educational priorities.
Shared gym and food service spaces dictate the elementary's core class schedule, requiring physical education classes to work around breakfast and lunch service times.
Two separate libraries but only one librarian, require time to be split between the Elementary and Middle School, reducing access for students.
Students lose valuable instructional time transitioning between buildings for classes such as music, art, and lunch.
BENEFITS OF A NEW BUILDING
The new facility will include modern classrooms, dedicated elementary and middle school gymnasiums, and flexible, multi-purpose spaces to support evolving educational needs.
Replacing aging buildings will significantly reduce ongoing operation and maintenance costs.
Improved building design will allow for more effective supervision of students.
Updated, code-compliant ventilation systems will provide a healthier and more comfortable learning environment.
Increased efficiency in heating systems will help ensure that operating additional square footage does not exceed the district’s current utility budget.
Eliminating deferred maintenance needs will allow resources to be redirected toward student learning and programming.
A new facility will be fully ADA-compliant, ensuring accessibility for all students, staff, and community members, including those with mobility, sensory, or other physical needs.
~A new building isn’t just about having something newer—it’s about creating an environment where students can learn better every single day.~

Pedestrian Safety
Efficient Use of Resources
PE(athletic) Space
Shared Common Space
Students commute between buildings during the day
Multiple exterior entrances are not monitored
Pedestrian safety concerns at drop-off/pickup areas
Continually increasing maintenance costs of old buildings
Old worn out systems, including heating & plumbing, with poor efficiency
Repair parts unavailable due to age
Handicapped accessibility is an issue
Inefficient rooms in 3 large, separate schools
Large amounts of inefficient space to heat and clean
Classrooms are not flexible or multi-use
Space is not arranged well for today's education
Handicap accessibility is an issue
Fixing worn out systems is inevitable, at high costs
Fixing failed systems will cost more at emergency rates
New consolidated spaces will be less costly to maintain
More money can be devoted to students and education
More teacher cooperation, more opportunity for collaboration, and improved technology use
Improved grade level transitions - more time learning, less time transitioning
Peer Mentoring across grade levels
Modern classrooms are designed for how students learn today—with proper lighting, acoustics, temperature control, flexible seating, and space for collaboration.
ALL spaces ADA compliant and accessible to all
